Hentai Kazoku (1983)
LOL. There is everywhere an obvious admiration and respect for Ozu, and everywhere a total subversion of the conservative family values Ozu’s films upheld. Other reviews say that this is specifically a parody of Tokyo Story, but there are images (see above), situations, and characters pulled from a wide range of Ozu films. I want more Ozu parodies! I also want to go back to Tokyo. :(

Vertical Ray of the Sun (2000)
Not quite what I expected, less interesting than I had hoped, but still pretty good. I had trouble getting over how fake the characters seemed, but whatever. The cinematography is, as most people note, gorgeous, but it spends too much time in close- and mid- shots to be all that stunning. The presence of water in this film is incredible. I have avoided this director for too long.
